Shape Reconstruction in Photometric Stereo Compensating for Inter-reflection and Directional Diffuse Reflection

چکیده

In photometric stereo one of the common problems may be inter-reflections occurring in concave surface parts of the object. They may locally blur the images in shade, resulting in a locally distorted shape. The effects may be more significant with increasing curvature of the concavity. Another problem may be non-Lambertian reflection, in which case shape reconstruction based on the Lambertian reflection may give non-local distortions. A combination of the diffuse and specular reflections called directional diffuse reflection may be typical of the nonLambertian reflections. In this paper, we present image processing methods of reducing the effects of the two problems. They are described mathematically, and experimental results are given to examine the two methods.

3D Reconstruction of Interreflection-affected Surface Concavities using Photometric Stereo

Image-based reconstruction of 3D shapes is inherently biased under the occurrence of interreflections, since the observed intensity at surface concavities consists of direct and global illumination components. This issue is commonly not considered in a Photometric Stereo (PS) framework. Under the usual assumption of only direct reflections, this corrupts the normal estimation process in concave...

3-D Stereo Using Photometric Ratios

We present a novel robust methodology for corresponding a dense set of points on an object surface from photometric values, for 3-D stereo computation of depth. We use two stereo pairs of images, each pair taken of exactly the same scene but under different illumination. By respectively dividing the left images and the right images of these pairs, a stereo pair of photometric ratio images is pr...

Surface shape and reflectance analysis using polarisation

When unpolarised light is reflected from a smooth dielectric surface, it becomes partially polarised. This is due to the orientation of dipoles induced in the reflecting medium and applies to both specular and diffuse reflection. This thesis aims to exploit the polarising properties of surface reflection for computer vision applications. Most importantly, the thesis proposes novel shape and ref...

A Differential Approach to Shape from Polarization

State-of-the-art formulations of the Shape from Polarisation problem consist of several steps based on merging physical principles that prevent this problem being described by a single mathematical framework. In addition, specular and diffuse reflections need to be separately considered, making the three-dimensional shape reconstruction not easily applicable to heterogeneous scenes consisting o...

Realistic photometric stereo using partial differential irradiance equation ratios

Shape from shading with multiple light sources is an active research area and a diverse range of approaches have been proposed in the last decades. However, devising a robust reconstruction technique still remains a challenging goal due to several highly non-linear physical factors being involved in the image acquisition process. Recent attempts at tackling the problem via photometric stereo re...
